Wednesday, September 30

  • Attention basketball players! We will be having open gym today from 5 until 6:30. You must have a permission form turned in to attend. Any questions? Just check with Coach Maragh. Hope to see you there!
  • Attention seniors: Grads Photography will be here on Oct. 2 to tale your cap and gown pictures. These are the pictures that will be in the yearbook so make sure to stop by before school, after school or during your lunch to get your picture taken. A photo information packet will be given to you in your Government class or you can stop by the bookstore to pick one up.
  • Attention all Students: If you did not get your picture taken for the yearbook your LAST chance will be Oct. 2. Make sure you stop by the photographer to get your picture taken before school, after school, or during lunch to ensure you will be in the yearbook. If you’re not sure if you need to have your photo done, stop by the bookstore with your ID and we can help you.
  • The cross country team raced yesterday in the District Meet. Jesus Ontiveros and Liz Molina ran their best races of the year so far, coming in 3rd and 5th respectively for the Boys and Girls Open Race. In the Boys' Varsity Race, Allen Larucci passed runners all they way to the finish line for a 14th place finish, and Oscar Rodriguez was the Patriots' top finisher with an impressive 8th place finish in a very fast district race. If you see Jesus, Liz, Allen or Oscar, ask to see their medals. Congratulations Patriot Runners!
  • Don't forget golf team - there is a meeting scheduled immediately after school today in Coach Novak's room to discuss the rest of the year's activities. Be there and go Patriots! The golf team's next match is Thursday at Mesa.
  • The Patriot swim and dive team had another great meet yesterday against Moon Valley. Individual first places finishes were won by Jessie Butler, Crystal Walters, Alyssa Blackwell, Keegan Thompson, Josh Angulo, Rhet Goodwin, and Richard Gomez. This team continues to improve and shave their times. With two regular season meets left, we look to be a very strong contender for many state qualifiers. Keep up the hard work everyone as we look forward to our meet in Prescott tomorrow.

  • All girls interested in playing soccer we will be starting open field on Monday October 5th. You will need to turn in a permission slip in order to attend open field which you can get in room 217 Ms. Monaghan's room or Room B26 Ms. Dillion's room. Open field will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00-4:30. Again it will start on Monday October 5th.
  • Attention Spanish Club members: Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 6th at 2:45 pm in Ms. Figueroa's room. This is a mandatory meeting for those students who signed up for the Relay for life and to serve as translators at the Desert Garden Elementary.

  • Hi word wizards! Did you guess last week's word of the week? Here it is in a sentence: The football coach evaluated the team's performance; he was pleased with his team's efforts. It was evaluate, which means to determine the value of something. Stay tuned for next week's word of the week!
  • There will be a mandatory Close Up meeting in R-5 on Wednesday, at 2:45. If you plan on going to Washington DC, please attend.
  • Hey Patriots, here are some quick tips to avoid getting sick this flu season. Avoid contact with people who are sick. If you’re sick, stay home! Cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands. Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth since germs spread easily this way. Always wash your hands with soap and water or use and alcohol-based sanitizer. Get plenty of sleep, exercise, drink lots of fluids and eat nutritious foods. Doing all these simple things can keep you healthy and reduce the spread of the flu.

  • Want to know what is new at Estrella Mountain Community College? Their representative will be here today during both lunches in the Mall. Be sure to ask her about their culinary program. They have a wonderful program in the West Valley.
  • All Seniors: Mark your calendar for October 6. It is Senior Visitation speakers will be in the gym from colleges and universities during first period. If you have a late-start do not forget to come October 6 at 8:00 AM.
  • Spanish club is meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 29th at 2:45p.m in Ms. Figueroa's room. This is a very important meeting. New members welcome!
  • The Patriots competed in the West Glendale Invitational this past weekend and came home with some individual honors. Senior Chris Gonzales was the medalist on Friday shooting the low round for the day. Freshman Anthony Quezada was named tournament medalist after coming in with a two day total of 102 and individual first place. Our next match is in Mesa on Thursday getting ready for the Glendale District Tournament next weekend. Way to go golfers!

  • The National College Fair will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center this Sunday afternoon from noon to 3:30. If you are wondering what college opportunities there are for you outside Arizona, then this is the event to attend. Over 130 schools will be represented including ones overseas in Italy, Canada, China, & Australia. You do not have to be seniors to attend. It is never too early to be thinking about your next educational institution.
  • Attention Patriots! The Patriot Corner is now officially up and running! It’s located next to the vending machines near the teachers’ lounge. We got what you need for a cheap price! We sell a variety of snacks and drinks such as water and Gatorade for $1. Don’t forget our delicious Cup-O-Noodles also for a $1. Get off your feet and get something to eat!

  • Teachers and Students- Just a reminder - Friday students will attend the Homecoming Assembly with their third hour class and teacher. They will report to third hour class, roll will be taken and they will go to the assembly and sit with their class and their teacher. After the assembly, all students and teachers will return to the classroom for third hour class. Students will leave their backpacks behind in the locked classroom to maximize on gymnasium space.
  • Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country team for their first place win over Moon Valley and Agua Fria. Scoring for the team was sophomore Vanessa Ventura with an awesome first place win overall! A fantastic second place finish was had by freshman Liz Molina, with dynamite finishes by Ylicia De La Garza (third), Victoria Ramirez (fourth) and Alexis Motes (5th). Great effort girls! Keep up the good work!
  • Your Patriot Swim and Dive team did GREAT yesterday against Greenway with a number of athletes getting their personal best times or scores. We would like to thank all those staff members who have come out already this year to cheer us on and a special thanks to Mr. Siwek, Mr. Sam, Ms. Fuchs and Ms. Bruington for helping run our meets. You ROCK!! Our next meet is Tuesday September 29 against Moon Valley at Glendale high school. If you want to watch these amazing student athletes perform be there by 4pm.

  • The Maricopa County Food handlers test will be given TODAY from 11-1p.m. in the mini auditorium. Any one wishing to sell food on campus should consider taking the test. Voluntary cards cost nothing and will support any on campus sales. However if you wish to purchase a Commercial Food handlers card it will cost 16.00 and is good for three years. See Mrs. Ingram in Rm. B-11 for details and to sign up. She also has a study guide which will help you study.
  • Grand Canyon University will be doing a lunch time visit today during both lunches in the Mall. Stop by and see what is new at Grand Canyon.

  • Your Independence Patriot Golf Team came in a close second this week to Thunderbird, 184 to 185 while both teams mowed down Cortez and Maryvale. Next week we have home matches at Desert Mirage and also the West Glendale Invitational. Go Patriots.

  • Students: If you are interested in bringing a guest to homecoming that is not a student here, go by the receptionist desk and pick up the guest passes. Your guest must be under 21 and you must provide a photo I.D. of them. Also, dress code still applies. Shirts must be shorter than your wrist and shorts and skirts must go past your finger tips.

  • The Patriots Swim and Dive team had a great meet against Apollo yesterday. Marty Trepanier and Rhet Goodwin took first place in the 500 free and the 100 backstroke along with a first place finish by our boys’ 200 freestyle relay team. The entire team performed well and is improving with every race. Our next meet is September 22nd at Glendale. Come out and support the swimming and diving Patriots!

  • The Lady Patriots traveled to Lake Havasu this weekend and defeated the 5A Bulldogs of Kingman in the Semi Finals and then advanced to the Championship game where they fell just short of beating defending Champs the Parker Broncos. They brought home a 2nd place plaque that you can see displayed in the front office this week. During the Tournament two of your Lady Patriots, Sarai Sweet and Vallery Orozco, where chosen as MVPs. Great Job ladies and good luck this week.
  • Congratulations to the Patriot Varsity Badminton team for a job well done at the Sunnyslope Forner Invitational Badminton Tournament this last weekend. Vanessa Jimenez and Rosie Sanchez each placed first in their singles category. Liz Preciado and Lupe Frias tied for first in their doubles category. Great work ladies!

  • Congratulations to your 6-0 undefeated Lady Patriots Varsity Volleyball team. Tuesday night they swept the Apollo Hawks, Wednesday night they destroyed the Verrado Vipers and last night they rocked the Rockets of Moon Valley. The ladies are off to a great start and appreciate all the supporters that have been out to see them play. They are off to Lake Havasu this weekend and hope to bring home some good news on Monday. What a great day to be a Patriot.

  • There will be a mandatory meeting for all girls interested in participating in off-season basketball workouts on Thursday Sept. 10 at 2:45 in the Lobby of the main gym. If you are not going to be able to attend please see Coach Gardner ASAP.
  • There will be a FBLA meeting Thursday, September 10 at 2:40 in Room G2. Please be on time.
  • Your IHS Patriot golf team finished a close second in a tight match with North High School while trouncing district competitors Washington and Apollo. Anthony Quezada led the charge with the low round for the Patriots. Next match is against Glendale and Sunnyslope at Pueblo El Mirage on Thursday. Go Patriots.
  • The Athletics office will be closed today. Mr. Siwek and Ms. Turquato will be out of the office for the whole day.

Tuesday, September 8

  • Spanish Club is having its first meeting TODAY at 2:45 at Ms. Figueroa's room R28. If you want to make a difference, join our club! Come for more information.
  • All boys interested in playing soccer this year, there will be a boys’ soccer meeting on Monday September 14th at 2:45 in the mini auditorium. Preseason workouts will start soon so you must attend this meeting on Monday September 14th at 2:45 in the mini.
  • All girls interested in playing soccer next year there will be a mandatory meeting TOMORROW. You can either come at 8:30am or at 2:45 to room 217 for the meeting. Once again that is all girls interested in playing soccer at IHS. Please attend the mandatory meeting TOMORROW before or after school.
  • There will be a Key Club meeting tomorrow at 2:45, and a Close Up meeting on Thursday, September, 10th at 245 in Mr. Mandile's room, R-5.
  • Your Patriot golf team finished second in a close match last Thursday with senior Chris Gonzales leading the charge against Thunderbird and Cortez. Action resumes today with a match versus Washington, Apollo and North. Go Patriots!
  • Attention basketball hopefuls! We will be showing the warning film, aka the sports video, today at 2:45 in the game gym. Open gym will resume once you have been cleared, so please be here!! Thanks!!

Friday, September 4

  • Attention anybody interested in taking online courses. Today is the last day to register for the courses. To sign up, see your counselor before or after school in the counseling office.
  • Do you need help preparing for the SATs or the ACTs? Then see your counselor to learn more about the free DeVry University SAT/ACT Review Workshop. It takes place on September 26th from 7:45 until 5 pm. Seats are limited, so get in to see your counselor right away!
  • Are you interested in becoming a nurse or doctor? The Career Center has the opportunity to take students to the Grand Canyon University Nursing Day in November. If you’re interested, stop by the Career Center in Counseling and leave your name.
  • Come to G-6 to get your balloon pet for only $3. Also available are foil happy birthday balloons as well as regular latex balloons.
  • Homecoming is just around the corner! Any Patriot that wants to run for homecoming Royalty; there will be a mandatory meeting Wednesday, September 11th at 2:45. The meeting will be short so please be there on time! See ya there!

  • New applications for free and reduced priced meals must be submitted each school year. Accounts from 08-09 school year will close on 9-21-09. Applications take up to 10 days to process, so be sure to submit your renewal as soon as possible in order to ensure continuation of benefits.
